From a Faith Perspective

I had a divine appointment with Larry, a man behind
the wall. Although we had different ethnic backgrounds, the Father knew what we
had in common, as we both have limited eyesight.
After our unique “eye discussion,” Larry said he was a
Christian and that one day God will forgive Him. I said, “You have already the
forgiveness of your sins.” He said, “Not this time.” I tried to reassure him but
he said, “Look, I know in God’s time He will forgive me.”
“Lord, what are the words I need to speak to him?” I
prayed. “Larry, I think I know what the problem is. “ You haven’t forgiven
yourself!” He looked shocked, and within the confines of his bunk began to sob
heavily. He said, “You just don’t understand. I’m here because I hurt a very
important member of my family in a fit of anger.”
“Lord, is there someone else you wish to speak with
Larry?” I glanced around and saw no one. More praying for wisdom.
You’re right Larry, this is a hard one. Even your
family might not ever forgive you for what you have done. You removed one of
them. But you can learn to love the man you can become. Give Jesus another
chance. Reluctantly he complied.
At this point, the count call was made and I had to
leave him. Although I felt my departure with him was premature, I knew the Holy
Spirit would linger with him.
I later saw Larry at another retreat talk. He was
greeting and hugging others, saying “God bless you, brothers.” With tears in my
eyes, I saw God’s outpouring love for Larry. He had been holding himself captive
with unforgiveness, and as a result, was hindered in growing in his relationship
with the Lord. But now he knows God has forgiven him. Even though he may still
be behind bars, he is free at last! Russell, prison volunteer
